Transmission Services:

Your car's transmission is the most complicated and least understood major component in your car or truck. In todays cars, the transmission is a combination of sophisticated hydraulics and computer-controlled electronic components.

The transmission is a mechanical component designed to transmit power from a vehicle's engine to the drive axle, which makes the wheels drive the vehicle.

By varying the gear ratio, the transmission alters the levels of power and speed to the wheels. For example, in low ranges, the transmission provides more power and less speed; in high ranges, just the opposite is true. This reduces the load on the engine, while increasing the vehicle's speed and fuel economy.

Some vehicles use a clutch to connect and disconnect the transmission to the engine, controlled through a clutch pedal next to the brake pedal. These vehicles have a manual transmission. If your car doesn't have a clutch pedal, it has an automatic transmission.

The important thing is to take your car to a qualified transmission repair shop where they can diagnose your transmission problem accurately, so you don't end up paying for work you don't really need.

Prevention is better than cure. You've probably heard that said plenty of times. The phrase is most often used to talk about health and medicine, but it is just as valid to apply it to vehicles. It's great if your problem can be sorted without much trouble, but even better not to have a problem in the first place. This is especially true when it comes to your vehicle's transmission, as this can be one of the more specialized parts to repair. Not all transmission problems require an extensive overhaul, but they will all cause at least some trouble and inconvenience. Avoiding transmission problems is clearly preferable to even the problems that are quickest and cheapest repair. This is why it is important to ensure you take good care of your transmission. This will help prevent problems and keep it working smoothly.

The good news is that the vast majority of transmission problems that come into the shop these days don't actually end up needing a new transmission. The repairs may end up costing less than 25% of the price of a rebuilt transmission

By performing tests, a technician will be able to tell you whether you're dealing with a problem inside the transmission, or a problem in the vehicle systems that control transmission operation.

Once a firm diagnosis is determined, a price for the repair can be calculated, whether it is a simple repair or internal repair. If the problem is inside the transmission, we may be able to give you a rebuild price based on the type of transmission and the transmission repair option you choose. If your preference is a custom-rebuilt transmission they'll need to disassemble and inspect the transmission in order to give you a firm price.

REBUILDING STANDARDS

All internal and external parts shall be dismantled and thoroughly cleaned and inspected, including the case and bell housing.
The following parts shall be replaced with new, each time; all lined friction clutch plates; all gaskets and rubber parts; metal sealing rings as are used in rotating applications; disposable type filters.
All bands as are used in dynamic applications shall be replaced with new or re-lined bands, each time.
The valve body shall be thoroughly cleaned and inspected; all dirt and varnish and foreign substances removed; all non-serviceable parts replaced, and new gaskets installed where applicable.
The torque converter shall be considered to be a part of the transmission; and any torque converter which is installed along with a rebuilt transmission shall be internally cleaned and inspected for wear; externally checked for leaks, cracks, weld failure and hub wear; and starter ring gear wear, where applicable. Any converter which is judged as not capable of delivering new converter performance and life shall be replaced with a new or rebuilt converter. Any converter which is installed along with a rebuilt transmission main body shall be guaranteed by the member along with the rest of the transmission.
Any and all other impaired, defective, or substantially worn parts which are not mentioned above, but which would not be expected to deliver new part performance, shall be restored to a sound condition, or replaced with new, rebuilt, or unimpaired used parts.

A transmission service is part of your routine maintenance, just like replacing your engine oil.

A complete transmission service should include:

  • removing and examining the sump or pan (where possible)
  • replacing or cleaning the screen or filter
  • cleaning the pan
  • reinstalling the pan with a new pan gasket
  • pumping out the rest of the old fluid and replacing it with new, high quality ATF
  • adding a friction modifier or additive package (model specific)

New fluid restores the holding power between the clutches, reducing slip and heat production.
At the same time, flushing the old fluid washes away tiny particles of clutch material and metal shavings. Those particles clog passages and wedge between moving parts, causing wear throughout the transmission. Changing the fluid eliminates those particles and the wear they cause.

The net result of changing the fluid is to provide better lubrication, improved the holding ability of the friction components, and reduced heat. So your transmission works better for years longer, which means you're less likely to face a major transmission repair.

And, where possible, adding an external filter to the cooler line to remove any dirt particles that make it past the internal filter. Most ATRA Member shops offer a complete fluid exchange service, and will be happy to explain the details to you.
